Saturday I got to participate in the base triathlon. What a blast!
We pulled our team together the day before. Stacey has been training for her first marathon so she was up for the 5K run. I hadn’t been training for anything but had a good bike. On Thursday I learned what the course was and gave it ride to see if I could finish it. Yep, so I was set for the 20K bike ride. Ronda our swimmer had been to the pool a few times that summer and felt she could finish. So we had a team.
There was minor a set back of unavailable husbands to watch each of our stack of kids. No problem, we’re moms after all, we can do anything. All we had to do was alternate babysitting while the other mom competed.
With no training (other than Stacey, but since it wasn’t planned she had done some major gym work on Thursday and went on a long run the day before and wasn’t feeling up to par) we had no plans of placing well but really just wanted to go out and have fun.
If you have ever participated in a race you know how about the adrenaline and excitement that comes. I have never been on a team before but that just made it all the more fun and exciting. Throw in all the kids cheering for the moms and it cant get much better.
We all did well for where we were at physically, no kids got lost or hurt, and it turned out, surprise surprise, that we won the team competition.
Being a small base the turn out was pretty small. There was less than 40 competitors and two teams; ours and a men’s team. The first runner to come in was part of the men’s team so I never entertained the idea that we had a chance. But as Ronda finished they announced us as the team competition winners. Apparently the men’s team was disqualified. Something to do with their swimmer.
We had so much fun; the cheering, the racing hard, the excitement to finish and then win. I cant wait until next year.
