This is my month – my name AND my birth month.
For the past 3 birthday I have held a Birthday Give-Away here on this blog. To read about how it got started here is the April 1st post from 2008.
Here are the basics.
In high school for one reason or another I started hating my birthdays and hated them for many years. I still haven’t figured out why a tear was shed almost every birthday or what I found so depressing about them but in 2008 I decided that that need to end and that if I was going to look forward to and enjoy my birthday it was up to me change things. So I did.
In 2008 I held my first Birthday Give Away. I was busy with life (homeschooling, myself in college, and my husband in law school) but dedicated all my free time in the month of April to working on some projects that I’d been dying to try. The problem with me when it comes to creating is that I am almost never satisfied with doing a project just once. I enjoy making the same things again and again. This way I learn to really make a given skill my own.
For that first April, I wanted to make some books. With my creating style I knew I’d end up with a bunch of books with no one to give them to. (I get strangely insecure about things I make sometimes and don’t want to burden people with things they do like or want.)
So the Birthday Give-Away was born. I would make as many items as I had time for that month and find homes for them by giving them all away to people who commented on any of my posts in April. I knew they were interested in receiving a gift because of their comments and I’d give them a chance to back out. At the end of the month I would e-mail the randomly chosen winners and let them know they had been selected and they would send me their address so I could ship it to them. No hard feelings what-so-ever have been felt by people who have declined or not responded to address requests. I simply choose another commenter. So, I get to spend the month doing something I love, sharpen my skills all month, spend my birthday wrapping presents, choosing names, and getting excited to share some of my handmade items with people who want them.
Here’s how things will go this year.
(similar to years past but with a small twist)
I will spend as much time as life responsibilities allow making and creating some items I’ve been dying to try or just love to make. I will be giving away all items made in April to readers of this blog and…
as a twist this year I want work in a service project that supports my local community as well. The plan is to make a quilt and a few covered notebooks that will be donated to my local women’s shelter. I haven’t called them yet and so I don’t know of restrictions on that or anything but that is my current plan.
All items that I make this month that are not destined for the Women’s Shelter will be wrapped up as presents and given away as gifts to readers of this blog who comment on any of my April 2011 posts. I plan on making a quilt to give away to a reader as well and will write a special Quilt Give-Away post to give this present away. I like to hold this give-away separate to ensure that the quilt goes to someone who wants that particular item. All other give away items will be offered to those who are randomly chosen on a first come first serve basis. More details on that later.
The short of it all is…
If you would like to be entered into my Birthday Give-Away, you will receive one entry for each April 2011 post you comment on. The only exception is for the special Quilt Give-Away post.
As we approach my birthday (April 30th) I will let you know when I will close comments for the give-aways. On April 30th I will choose and announce winners and let them know how to choose their gifts and then ship them out as soon as I receive addresses. Most make it into the mail the very next day.
If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment or e-mail me at email@example.com
I hope you all have a great month. I know I will.
